Primary Activity 2b and Secondary Activity 2b - My Connection to Deforestation

What are three items you have found in your classroom that are linked to materials found in the forest? What are some strategies to ensure they do not contribute to deforestation?

Through this deforestation project, i had a clearer view and a new perspective to look at in our daily lives. In this instance, in our classroom...

1)Boys crumbling paper(that can still be used) into balls and take turns to throw it in the dustbin(see who successfully scores by standing the furthest etc)

Even though their approach is good, in a sense that they do not litter but actually think of a creative and fun game to actually practice being litter-free. BUT, they do not approach or concern as to whether the paper is thoroughly used up on both sides. It could be a clean paper and it would be wasteful. Moreover, these should go to the recycling bin for a better cause. We should treasure paper as trees die to produce them for us. Wasting it would be trampling on their morale.

To solve it, they should have a lesson or two about deforestation & that paper should be going to the recycling bin instead of a dustbin and the paper has to be used up. Maybe the first offend may be spared but the second time, he/she might have to do a forfeit(picking litter for a month in our classroom etc)

2)Girls writing secret letters and passing them all around class.

This could be new, it could be fun, mysterious, whatever.... Most importantly, ITS WASTING PAPER! At the end of the day, majority would just dispose of the paper. They might be so engaged that they did not pay attention in class and worst, the paper have no relation to what the teacher is talking about. (talking about the newest or most in kind of brands during a science lesson)

To solve this, they must understand that THEY ARE WASTING PAPER! At least, by disposing, feed the recycling bins. They need our love, their hungry. I suggest they could just talk or secretly message them. It is not encouraged as it disrupts the lesson and only the students are the losing end. BUT HEY, TO SAVE TREES AND REDUCE PAPER, ITS WORTH A SHOT! If they could kill two birds with one stone(by talking and listening), we are killing three birds with one stone!(prevent wastage of paper)

3)Our files are so stacked! Every subject weighs a lot of worksheets!

There are just so many exams, so many homework, so many tests. Dreadful isn't it? What's worse, IT ALL CONSUMES PAPER! Thinking about it, what is good that while gaining knowledge, you harm the earth?

To solve it, i believe many students would be dying to see a resolution such as: NO EXAMS, NO HOMEWORK, NO TESTS! At least if they are reduced even by a small amount, who wouldn't be happy? But these knowledge are also beneficial, if not would you know what is deforestation, would you understand what am i even typing? Hence, technology is improvising so well, homework or tests can be conducted through the internet. For example, like what i am doing, i am responding to a discussion. Another example, setting tests questions on a blog and have students message the teachers and the teachers message them back the scores and corrections etc. It sounds pretty cool, isn't it?

From all these behaviors, we can proudly conclude that humans of all sizes, religion etc WASTE PAPER, leading to higher consumption of paper, eventually to a higher demand for paper and more trees have to be sacrificed innocently, causing deforestation!
