Philippine Coral Reef Destruction- Ruthie Britton

The oceans in the Philippines are beautiful. However, what goes on underneath them is an entirely different story. Only 5 percent of the coral reefs in the Philippines today remain in healthy condition. There was a recent scandal of people who destroyed around 7,000 hectors of coral reefs and smuggled turtles out of the country. Deforestation surrounding the oceans have also lead to more damage to the reefs. The ocean is depended on by almost half of the Philippians as their primary source. What can be done then, to maintain the coral reefs and protect them from further destruction? Closer regulation on who navigates the waterways might prevent instances such as smuggling from happening in the future. Also, maintaining the amount of forestation around the ocean might lead to less damage under the water.
