Dendrochronology-1 | momahony |
This is the 1st in a series of 3 activities. It is straightforward and introduces the concept of using tree cores as well as wood from old houses, etc. From this, students can build into the next activity - using tree cores to analyze past climate over several 100 years. May 15th, 2012 Manage |
Dendrochronology-1 Tree Cores to Copy | momahony |
Good, larger set of tree cores to copy May 15th, 2012 Manage |
Dendrochronology-2 Little Ice Age | momahony |
This great activity in the Climate Discovery Teachers' Guide not only has students analyzing tree cores but also "discovering" the Little Ice Age that happened in the middle ages. To make it better, buy thin dowling and cut it to the lengths of the tree cores - then glue the cores on them. Spray with preserver to prevent the ink from smudging. May 15th, 2012 Manage |
Ice Core Analysis Activity | momahony |
I developed this from an NSTA The Science Teacher article. The second half was put together by Mary Hall (UTS). Use larger test tubes and give about 4 days to make the cores. Use light blue colouring and HCl to acidify cores from warmer years. Add ash to cores from years that are "warmer" due to volcanic action. May 15th, 2012 Manage |
